
Wealthy, young-at-heart business owner Edward Stratton III is stunned to discover his brief marriage several years ago produced a son, Richard Bluedhorn-Stratton, now 12 and standing in Edward's living room, wanting to live with the father he never knew. Although Edward's first impulse is to send Ricky to boarding school, he soon relents and let his son move in with him and Kate, his love-struck secretary.





Nothing disturbs the easy irresponsibility of wealthy Edward Stratton III (Joel Hlgglns), who's content to play with his collection of electronlc games-untll 12-year-old Rlcky (Rlcky Schroder) shows up, claiming to be Edward's homeless son. In the opener, Edward gets another jolt when he learns he's on the brink of financial disaster.
Ricky is convinced that his father doesn't love him because he never gets punished. Edward (Joel Higgins) overreacts when Ricky (Ricky Schroder) is beaten up on his first day at school: he hires the formidable Mr. T. ("Rocky III") as a bodyguard.
Edward lets Ricky try his hand at managing an ice cream parlor.
Ricky is afraid he'll feel left out on a skiing trip with his father when Kate unexpectedly joins them.
After Kate talks Edward out of buying Ricky a dirt bike, he tricks his visiting mother into buying him one. As a result, they have to terms with Kate's relationship with Ricky's dad.
Pearl Bailey plays Edward's friend Lulu Baker, a retired restaurateur who's back in town to enjoy her golden years. But Rick (Ricky Schroder) would rather see her take over his favorite hamburger hangout.
Edward (Joel Higgins) does his best to remain cool, calm, and clear-headed about Rick's obnoxious and rebellious new friend, who Edward suspects may be a thief.
Rick unwittingly sells faulty cameras to his friends after falling prey to a scam set up by two scalawags (Paul Williams, Pat McCormick).
After learning of Rick's poor grades at school, Edward gives him a stern lecture on why improving his grades will increase his chances of getting into college. Taking his father's words to heart, Rick goes to insane lengths to improve his grades, especially in geometry. However, when Kate sees how stressed out Rick is with regards to his grades, she talks to Edward about relaxing when it comes to taking his son's future so seriously.
Rick is determined to cook a special Mother's Day dinner for Evelyn.
