William Travers, an accomplished criminal lawyer living happily with his wife in rural Suffolk, is recovering from a traumatic series of events that have shaken his faith in the legal system when he is drawn into a case involving an old friend.

Defense barrister William Travers risks his family's quiet country life when he undertakes the defense of an old friend accused of murder. He faces trouble at home when a policeman investigates a local killing.
Travers pays his old friend Martin Newall a visit to hear about the murder case and learns that there might be a conspiracy at work. In the meantime, DI Wendborn tries to find evidence and motive in the Suffolk murder.
Travers keeps looking for proof of Martin Newall's innocence and questions a chambermaid whose testimony could exonerate Newall. DI Wendborn finds out that his murder victim is Philip Spaull, an animal-rights activist accused in a manslaughter case a few years back. However, Spaull was acquitted thanks to his barrister, William Travers.
Travers finds evidence regarding the murder victim Lucy Wilson that could hurt Newall's case. Meanwhile, DI Wendborn finds a lead to the weapon dealer who provided the gun that killed Spaull.
Travers learns that the murder victim Lucy Wilson was looking for information about a scandal caused by Newall's employer Qestrel. DI Wenborn believes to have found his murderer and even uses blackmail for a witness' statement. However, an unfortunate event stops him.
