Kagome Higurashi is a modern day young girl who lives with her family by the old Higure shrine. Unbeknownst to Kagome, she is the reincarnation of priestess Kikyo and posseses the "Jewel of Four Souls" (the Shikon jewel). One ill-fated day, Kagome locates an ancient well near her home and is abruptly transported through the well and into a feudal Japan, inhabited by demons. There, she encounters Inuyasha, son of a powerful demon father and a human mother, who is pinned to a tree by an enchanted arrow.

In Japan's Warring States period, a half-demon boy named Inuyasha is sealed by the priestess Kikyo. Centuries later, Kagome, a modern-day schoolgirl, is transported back in time and accidentally breaks the seal, awakening Inuyasha. Just then, a centipede demon attacks and tears into Kagome's side—revealing the Sacred Jewel, the Shikon no Tama. The demon swallows it, but Inuyasha swiftly defeats it with a single blow.
Kagome is revealed to be the reincarnation of Kikyo, the priestess who once protected the Sacred Jewel. When the demon Yura of the Hair kidnaps her to obtain the jewel, Inuyasha rushes to her rescue. Although he tears the demon apart, it regenerates after having swallowed the jewel. When Kagome fires an arrow at the demon, the Sacred Jewel shatters into countless fragments, scattering them across the land.
With Kagome's ability to detect jewel shards and Inuyasha's power to fight demons, they're forced to team up to retrieve the scattered fragments. However, they quarrel, and Kagome returns to her time through the Bone-Eater's Well. Meanwhile, the demon Yura uses villagers to ambush Inuyasha. Injured but determined, he follows Kagome back to the modern world.
While Kagome relaxes at home, Inuyasha comes through the well to retrieve her—unaware that a strand of Yura's demon hair clings to his shoulder. To stop her from attacking the modern world, Kagome returns to the past with Inuyasha. They face Yura in battle, but she traps them in flames from her demonic comb.
Kagome learns that Inuyasha is a half-demon, born of a human mother and a powerful dog-demon father. His older half-brother, Sesshomaru, searches for their father's grave and even summons Inuyasha's deceased mother from the afterlife. But the one who appears is a demon in disguise. Inuyasha is nearly consumed by her illusion.
Sesshomaru forces the truth from the demon and extracts a black pearl from Inuyasha's eye—revealing their father's grave. He enters it in search of the legendary sword, Tetsusaiga. Kagome and Inuyasha follow. Though the sword is meant for Inuyasha, it's Kagome who first draws it from its resting place.
Sesshomaru tries to kill Kagome for drawing the sword. Enraged, Inuyasha defends her, unlocking the sword's true form: a massive fang-shaped blade. Revealing his monstrous form, Sesshomaru battles Inuyasha—but is ultimately forced to retreat after losing an arm.
In the province of Kai, a bumbling young samurai named Nobunaga learns that a demon has possessed his childhood friend's new husband, a feudal lord. With Kagome's clever help, the toad demon Tsukumo no Gama is driven out—though not without a struggle.
Shippo, a young fox-demon, seeks revenge after the Thunder Brothers, Hiten and Manten, kill his father. Hoping to use the Sacred Jewel for power, Shippo steals a shard from Kagome. But when Manten kidnaps her to make hair tonic from her remains, Inuyasha must act quickly.
Inuyasha rescues Kagome by tricking Hiten and using the Tetsusaiga to defeat Manten. Hiten absorbs Manten's shard and gains immense power, attacking with lightning strikes. Inuyasha fends him off using only the sword's scabbard—until the blade itself responds and unleashes its true strength.
While Kagome returns home to study, a cursed Noh mask stored at the Higurashi Shrine awakens, seeking the Sacred Jewel's power. When it attacks, her younger brother Sota desperately summons Inuyasha to save her.
Kagome sees a Soul Piper, a spirit guide for children, and meets the ghost of a girl named Mayu on the verge of turning into an evil spirit. As Kagome tries to help her pass on, the Soul Piper's eyes begin to glow—signaling Mayu's descent into darkness unless she's saved in time.
During the night of the new moon, Inuyasha becomes fully human. While staying at a mountainside temple, the group is tricked by a spider demon who steals the Sacred Jewel. Poisoned and weakened, Inuyasha must rely on Kagome's support to survive.
The demon Urasue digs up the remains of Kikyo, the priestess who sealed Inuyasha. Using her ashes and grave soil, she revives Kikyo's body—but without a soul, it's just an empty shell. Then Urasue spots Kagome and realizes she holds Kikyo's reincarnated soul.

The flirtatious monk Miroku steals a shard of the Sacred Jewel from Kagome. When Inuyasha pursues him, Miroku unleashes his Wind Tunnel curse—a void in his hand that sucks in everything.
