In the present, after serving 15 years in prison for the murder of Alexandra Forrest, Daniel Gallagher is paroled with the goals of reconnecting with his family and proving his innocence. In the past, 2008, Dan celebrates his 40th birthday and first meets the charming colleague whose death would eventually lead to his incarceration and the destruction of the life he knew.

In the past, an intensely passionate connection turns sour when Dan realizes Alex wants more from him than the impression she's been giving. In the present Dan's loved ones reel from his reappearance in their lives; Dan and Mike are reunited and Ellen discusses her hopes for her relationship with Dan with her therapist.

In the present, Dan prepares the application for his new trial and shares it with the people in his life who were most affected by the original trial's verdict. While in the past, Dan prepares his defense with Cabral. In the more distant past, key moments in Alex's life shape the woman she becomes when she meets Dan.

The collision course Dan set for everyone around him plays out in both the past and present. Dan tries to move forward with regret and honesty, agreeing to continue at Jorge's firm and revealing to Ellen that the judge denied his appeal. When Mike and Dan are invited to brunch at Beth and Arthur's home, it becomes clear he is surrounded by secrets.
